    How to Subscribe

To subscribe to the Scanning Probe Microscope List send the text

    subscribe spm <email address>
    end

to the address Majordomo@di.com. This is called sending a command to the list server. Replace '<email address>' with your actual e-mail address. Make sure you put the commands in the text portion of the message not the subject, since the subject of your message will be ignored. If you have an automatic signature appended to the end of your e-mail messages you must include the 'end' command. Do not include the '<' or '>' characters in the message.

If you wish to receive periodic digests instead of individual messages send the text

    subscribe spm-digest <email address>
    end

Once you have subscribed to the list you will receive a confirmation message. You will then begin receiving a copy of every message sent to the list.

How to Post Messages to the List

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to spm@di.com. This is called sending mail to the list, because you send mail to a single address and the Majordomo software distributes copies to all the people who have subscribed to the list. This address is also called the list address. You must never try to send any command to the list address, because it would be sent to the entire list.

Posting of proprietary information on any manufacturer's product is not permitted. Offenders will be deleted from the list. Other than that, the usual rules of Internet conduct are expected.

When replying to messages posted to the list you should consider whether your reply is of general interest or not. If your reply is of general interest you should send your message to the list. If your reply is not of general interest or of a personal nature you should send your message to the person who originally posted the message. This will prevent the newsgroup from being clogged with messages that say things like, "Jerry, Thanks for the information!".

Depending on the configuration of the list server software and of your mailer the address automatically entered as the reply-to field of your reply may either be the list address or the address of the person who originally posted the message. You should always check this first before you send your message.

In either case you should copy the original subject, preceded by the characters 'Re:', to the new subject field if your mailer does not do this for you.
